This is just another case of insanity and really winds me up. What is Jimmy Nail going to say now?? They are nothing more than terms of endearment and are in no way disrespectful. It's a way of personalising the impersonal and we should all welcome it. Pah!

The thing is, don't almost ALL geordies - men or women - use "pet"? like all people from Derbyshire using "duck" for males or females...
on the other hand, if anyone called me "Hinny" I'd deck them - and I'm not sure it's always harmless...
it depends on who's saying it, but I find often when you're going into male-dominated areas (like my friend working with unions) it's to differentiate us and put women on a different footing...
